How to classify soils
Soil Classification means to group soils that are similar in characteristics and qualities into order.

There are several soil classification systems i.e. Russian, French, British and Belgian soil classification. The popular system are Soil Taxonomy of the United States of America and FAO soil classification.

Development of Thai soil classification began from American soil scientists then we have used National Soil Classification (USDA 1938). Dr. R. Dandal and Dr. F.R. Moorman from FAO had introduced and developed Thai soil classification from National Soil Classification to Thailand in 1964. The biggest unit to be classified in Thailand at that time are 17 great soil groups which 11 main groups are often found and the rest is rare.

Soil Taxonomy was applied after USDA in 1960 and was developed over space and time to meet the the development of human technology. According to Soil Taxonomy,
Thai soils were classified into 9 within 12 orders.
